Movie Facts

Hotel Twilight carries many secrets.  These hardly known film facts are just some of them.  To ease your fears, our sources are highly credible.

|+| Brooke McCarter was already cast in the role of David before the studio was able to obtain Kiefer Sutherland for the part.  Brooke was paid to step down into the role of Paul so Kiefer could take over David.

|+| Brooke, Billy, Alex and Kiefer were all trained by Evel Knievel’s motorcycling stuntman to ride their motorcycles.  They all really learned how to ride and only the major stunts were performed by doubles.

|+| Kiefer broke his wrist doing stunts on his bike.  David’s gloves were a means to cover the cast.

|+| When the boys wake up to find Marko dead, the rage they show is real.  The glass impermeable lenses limited the amount of time the guys could wear them so when they were shooting upside down for that scene, they had to be lifted and lowered roughly every five minutes into those positions in order to accommodate the lenses.  On top of that frustration and the fact they had glass lenses in their eyes, dirt was constantly dropping into them causing even more pain.

|+| The boys went nocturnal during filming.  The producers wanted as little exposure to the sunlight as possible for the guys so they could have relatively pale vampire skin.  While staying at the Holiday Inn in Santa Cruz, they hung heavy drapes over their windows during the day so they could sleep since most of their filming was done at night.

|+| The outside shots of the cave, Max’s house and the trestle scene were NOT shot in Santa Cruz.  Don’t believe otherwise.  The cave is closer to Anaheim (south of Santa Cruz) while Max’s house and the trestle were north.  The interior scenes of the cave, Max’s house, Grandpa’s house (some of the exterior shots as well) and the trestle were filmed in a studio in Los Angeles.

|+| The house used to film the exterior of Grandpa’s house, the Pogonip Clubhouse, is still standing on the Pogonip Preserve in the Santa Cruz mountains.  It was badly damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and subsequently condemned.  Recently the clubhouse has been undergoing slow and slightly unsteady renovations to restore the once-awesome clubhouse from it’s crumbling, condemned state.  Due to the State of California’s economic condition, the renovations are more stalled than started but it’s looking a hell of a lot better than it used to.

|+| Jamison felt guilty about playing a vampire hunter because, when he went to ride the Pirate Ship on the boardwalk, he got sick.  He felt a little disheartened that here he was, supposed to be playing this tough commando yet he couldn’t stomach a swing ride.

|+| The 20th anniversary celebration of the film in Santa Cruz in July of  2007 was the first time Brooke, Billy, Chance and Jamison returned to Santa Cruz since filming the movie.

|+| The carousel scene at the beginning of the movie is Brooke’s favorite scene even though he doesn’t like to watch himself on screen.

|+| When Brooke was filming his death scene, the dog trainers ended up having to throw the dog at him in order for the scene to work.  Prior attempts using a ramp didn’t prove useful and they felt this was the only way they could get their shot.
