The Book

Consider this the bible of Hotel Twilight. This novel is indeed a rare find and highly valuable to any collector anxious to get their hands on a copy. This written word version of the film offers some valuable insight into the characters and circumstances that the movie blissfully left out.
For instance, it states that Dwayne skateboards (perhaps that was something better left out, honestly, can you see him on a skateboard? but don’t tell him I said that). We’re told he does it around the cave/hotel lobby. Also, it determines that Paul is the youngest of the four Lost Boys, something that is much debated amongst the fans. Alas, since not every uber-fan owns a copy of this book, not all of them are going to know about that little tidbit.
While the movie shows Laddie as rather mute, the book gives him the voice he was so lacking. Apparently one of the drawbacks of being a half-vampire is that your memories fade, turning into something hardly more than a dream. Laddie comments to Star on that when he’s having trouble with his situation.
Michael gets a summer job when he first moves to Santa Carla, as a garbage collector on the beach. This scene was actually filmed but cut from the original release. It can be seen on the special edition DVD as a deleted scene. Also deleted from the movie was the fabled ear-piercing scene that we get a glimpse of in the ‘Lost In The Shadows’ music video. This plays into Michael’s mysterious shirt change between him drinking the blood in the cave and them ending up on the train trestle. In the book, Michael’s blood drinking and the ear-piercing/trestle scene were on two different nights. It would seem it was filmed as such but cut in the final edit with Michael’s switching shirts left in.
According to the book, Star felt the only person she could talk to was Paul. She felt the most comfortable around him. That certainly adds some insight into the whole dynamic of that group. Star’s character is fleshed out a bit more in the book. We’re privy to why she ran away from home and where she ends up after the movie fades out. It’s only more depth to the film we all love.
As was the intent with the original film, the book also has a hint of a teaser at the end about more vampires in Santa Carla. Alas, it is just a tease that’s left for the fanfiction writers to flesh out.
A lot of the scenes in this book, including Laddie talking to Star about his home and the ear-piercing scene, were filmed but left out of the deleted scenes option of the special edition DVD. Why the makers decided to not even include those bits of fantasy even as extras, we’ll never know and will be left only to speculate.
I believe that should be enough highlighting to fan the fires you may have for acquiring this read. If you do happen to come across a copy, do what you can to get a hold of it. There are far more Lost Boys fans than there are copies available. Remember that. Vendors such as eBay have copies popping up every now and then and Amazon seems to have a steadier stream available. But don’t expect to walk away with your pockets still heavy. Since these are in pretty high demand, they won’t come cheap.
